Executive Director, Climate and Energy Program

Third Way

Brussels, Belgium

Job description

Third Way’s Climate and Energy Program designs and advocates for policies to put the United States on the fastest, fairest path to net-zero emissions by 2050. To reach this goal, we will need to harness every clean energy technology available today and accelerate innovation to both improve these existing tools and invent those we still need to reach net-zero. We are expanding our work to advocate for technology-inclusive policies to achieve net-zero emissions in Europe. We are looking for an Executive Director that will lead our expansion to Europe, establishing a program that will help develop and advocate for policies to accelerate the innovation and deployment of a diverse suite of clean energy technologies. This includes building support within the climate community in Europe for options that include wind, solar, existing nuclear reactors, advanced nuclear, carbon capture and sequestration, energy storage, and new transmission resources. It also includes support for policies to enable the rapid decarbonization of the transportation, industrial, and agricultural sectors.

The Executive Director will represent Third Way's Climate and Energy Program's new European initiative in front of European governments, the media, and in coalitions involving other NGOs and clean energy technology providers. The Executive Director will work with Third Way Climate and Energy Program leadership to develop and execute strategies to influence policy to reach net-zero emissions in Europe. This will include building coalitions, overseeing research, engaging with the media, and directly interacting with key government officials.

As the Executive Director of Third Way Climate and Energy Program, Europe, a typical day could involve:

  • Directly engaging with key policymakers in the European Parliament, European Union member countries, and the United Kingdom on climate and energy policy;
  • Authoring high-impact written reports, memos, and op-eds that persuasively illuminate the need for aggressive, technology-neutral approaches to achieve net-zero emissions as quickly as possible;
  • Identifying potential NGO and industry partners, exiting coalitions, and other potential partners to increase our ability to affect public policy;
  • Tracking and analyzing proposed policy ideas and proposed legislation, and assessing their impact on emissions and specific climate solution technologies;
  • Working with other members of Third Way’s climate and energy, communications, and outreach teams to raise awareness of policy opportunities in Europe, and to increase the visibility of Third Way Climate and Energy efforts in Europe.

WITHIN 1 MONTH, YOU WILL...

  • Participate in Third Way’s comprehensive onboarding program. You’ll learn about all aspects of Business Operations, which includes benefits, IT, and finance;
  • Become familiar with Third Way, especially the staff, priorities, and operations of the Climate and Energy Program;
  • Engage regularly with the Climate and Energy Program’s leadership team to discuss and plan for the expansion to Europe;
  • Review a report put together by external consultants on the climate advocacy landscape in Europe, including an assessment of the NGOs, key influencers, and parliamentary leaders/opponents for the UK, EU, and a select set of key EU member states that work on clean energy policy or climate advocacy.

WITHIN 2 MONTHS, YOU WILL...

  • Use the landscape assessment to identify potential partners involved in climate and clean energy policy, advocacy, and implementation;
  • Develop a strategic plan for building advocacy and knowledge capacity in Europe and the UK with a select group of NGOs and policy leaders who could become partners on a common policy agenda.

WITHIN 3 MONTHS, YOU WILL…

  • Begin implementing the strategic plan and building a network in Europe, in coordination with the Climate and Energy Program’s leadership team.
